Complaint is quiet work. It rarely arrives as a shout. It begins as a remark under the breath, a comparison, a sense that things ought to have gone differently by now.
When the people of Israel left Egypt, they had seen the sea open in front of them. Days later they were murmuring about food. The miracle had not failed. Their memory had.
This is the danger of a hard season. It does not only tire the body; it edits the record. It persuades you that God has been absent, when in fact you have simply stopped counting what He has already done.
Gratitude is not a mood. It is a discipline, and it is available to you today even if nothing in your circumstances has changed. Name one thing that is true and good. Say it out loud. Then name another.
This is not a technique for feeling better. It is how faith keeps its footing. The person who counts Godâs faithfulness in small things is the person still standing when the large thing finally comes.
If you have been murmuring, and most of us have, you do not need to punish yourself for it. You need only to turn. Bring the complaint to God directly, as a prayer rather than a grievance, and let Him answer it.
This week, before you ask God for anything, tell Him one thing you are thankful for. Do it every day, and watch what happens to the weight you have been carrying.
