Why It Matter for a Strong and Happy Relationship?
Love may bring two people together, but what helps them remain close through the years?
Affection plays an important role in keeping emotional connection alive in a marriage. Yet as life becomes busier, it can gradually be pushed aside by work, children, responsibilities, tiredness and daily routines.
At the beginning of a relationship, affection often comes naturally. Couples make time for one another, stay in touch throughout the day and look for different ways to show that they care.
After marriage, however, life can become much busier. Without realising it, the affection that was once freely expressed can become less frequent.
But marriage should not be the point where affection begins to disappear.
Affection needs to be intentionally cultivated throughout a relationship, not only during dating or the first few years of marriage.
Affection should continue after marriage
The Bible gives us an interesting example in the relationship between Isaac and Rebekah.
In Genesis 26:8, King Abimelech sees Isaac showing affection towards his wife.
What makes this moment significant is that Isaac and Rebekah were already married.
Their affection was not part of an attempt to impress one another at the beginning of a relationship. It remained part of the way they related as husband and wife.
That is an important reminder for couples today.
Affection does not always require an expensive dinner, a holiday or an elaborate romantic gesture.
Sometimes it is found in the smallest things:
- Holding hands
- Giving a hug
- Speaking kindly
- Paying attention when your spouse is talking
- Showing appreciation
- Making time for one another
- Offering reassurance and encouragement
These simple expressions can communicate something very important:
You still matter to me.
Intimacy begins in everyday life
Emotional and physical intimacy do not begin only when a couple is alone together.
They are often built throughout the day.
The way a husband and wife speak to each other, respond during disagreements, show respect, resolve problems and demonstrate care all contribute to the atmosphere of the relationship.
A harsh conversation in the morning can affect closeness later in the day.
In the same way, patience, kindness and thoughtfulness can strengthen emotional connection.
This is why affection should not be treated only as an occasional romantic gesture. It should also be part of the everyday care of a relationship.
What can hinder affection in a marriage?
If affection is so important, why does it sometimes become difficult to maintain?
Several issues can gradually create emotional distance between husband and wife.
1. Lack of communication
When couples stop communicating openly, misunderstandings can grow.
Unspoken frustrations and unresolved concerns may eventually create distance between two people who once felt very close.
Healthy communication does not mean that couples will never disagree. It means learning how to speak honestly while still listening, respecting and seeking to understand one another.
2. Resentment
Unresolved hurt can slowly change the way a person sees and responds to their spouse.
When past mistakes are constantly remembered but never truly addressed, resentment can become a barrier to affection.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that something painful never happened. It means refusing to allow that pain to permanently control the relationship.
3. Pride
Sometimes a disagreement continues because neither person wants to admit that they were wrong.
Pride can make apologising feel like losing.
In reality, recognising a mistake and sincerely asking for forgiveness often requires far more strength than defending yourself at all costs.
Someone has to be willing to take the first step.
4. Exhaustion
Physical and emotional tiredness can affect even a healthy relationship.
Work pressures, parenting, financial concerns and responsibilities can leave couples with very little energy for one another.
Rest is important, but exhaustion should not become a permanent reason for emotional neglect.
Even during busy seasons, small moments of connection can make a difference.
5. Neglect
Relationships rarely become distant overnight.
It often happens gradually.
Conversations become shorter. Quality time becomes less frequent. Affection decreases. Other responsibilities always seem more urgent.
A healthy marriage requires intentional investment.
We tend to make time for what we truly consider important, and marriage should remain one of those priorities.
6. Pornography
Pornography can introduce unrealistic expectations, secrecy and emotional distance into a relationship.
It may affect trust, intimacy and the way one spouse views the other.
When it becomes part of a relationship, honesty and a willingness to seek appropriate support are important steps towards addressing the harm it may cause.
7. Infidelity
Infidelity can cause deep emotional pain and seriously damage trust.
Rebuilding a relationship after betrayal is rarely simple. It requires honesty, accountability, time and a genuine commitment to change.
For some couples, professional counselling may also be an important part of the recovery process.
Forgiveness helps relationships move forward
Every marriage will experience disagreements.
The issue is not whether mistakes will happen, but how husband and wife respond when they do.
Forgiveness is essential because unresolved conflict creates emotional distance.
Sometimes both people wait for the other person to apologise first.
But restoring peace may begin when one person decides that protecting the relationship is more important than protecting their pride.
A sincere apology can be simple:
âI was wrong. I am sorry. Please forgive me.â
Those words can open the door to healing when they are accompanied by genuine change.
Do not allow routine to replace your relationship
Routine is part of married life.
There are bills to pay, meals to prepare, children to care for, work to complete and countless other responsibilities.
But a relationship cannot survive on responsibilities alone.
Couples need moments when they can speak as husband and wife rather than only as parents, employees or people managing a household.
This does not always require spending money.
Take a walk together.
Sit down without your phones.
Share a meal.
Talk about something other than problems.
Ask how the other person is really doing.
What matters most is intentional connection.
Singles should also pay attention to emotional healing
The subject of affection is not relevant only to married couples.
Those who are single should also consider what they may be carrying from previous relationships.
Past betrayal, rejection, disappointment or emotional wounds can affect the way a person approaches a future relationship.
Someone may struggle to trust, receive affection or express vulnerability because of something that happened years earlier.
A new relationship should not be expected to repair wounds that have never been properly addressed.
Taking time to heal, grow and understand yourself can help prepare you for a healthier relationship in the future.
Stop trying to change the other person first
When a relationship is struggling, it is easy to focus entirely on what the other person is doing wrong.
âIf only my husband would change.â
âIf only my wife would listen.â
âIf only they would behave differently.â
But you cannot force another person to change.
You can, however, examine yourself.
A powerful prayer can therefore become:
âGod, show me where I need to change.â
That prayer requires humility.
Instead of asking God only to correct the person beside you, you allow Him to reveal attitudes, habits or behaviours within you that may also need attention.
When transformation begins within us, it naturally affects the way we speak, respond, forgive and love.
Affection is something you continue to build
A strong relationship is rarely sustained by one dramatic romantic gesture.
It is built through many small decisions.
Choosing to listen.
Choosing to forgive.
Choosing to communicate.
Choosing to make time.
Choosing to show affection even after many years together.
Love may begin with a feeling, but lasting relationships also require commitment, maturity and daily care.
The Bible says:
âAnd above all things have fervent love for one another, for âlove will cover a multitude of sins.ââ
1 Peter 4:8
Affection is one of the ways that love becomes visible.
